The journey back from Staten Island had been a nightmare for Trent. What should have taken forty-five minutes had turned into a two-hour gridlock, thanks to a three car pile-up on I78, near Liberty State Park.

Trent emerged from the darkened tunnel mouth, taking exit route 2 into Canal Street, at the very moment that power had been restored. Before him the whole of Manhattan lit up like a Christmas tree. It was a relief.

The NYPA, fearing a massive overload, controlled the loading in stages. They crossed fingers and prayed.

For the emergency services it was a blessing. Things could get back to normal; well almost. At least with power they weren’t handicapped. They could do their jobs.
